Lesson 43

God is my Source. I cannot see apart from Him.

1. Perception is not an attribute of God. ²His is the realm of knowledge. ³Yet He has created the Holy Spirit as the Mediator between perception and knowledge. ⁴Without this link with God, perception would have replaced knowledge forever in your mind. ⁵With this link with God, perception will become so changed and purified that it will lead to knowledge. ⁶That is its function as the Holy Spirit sees it. ⁷Therefore, that is its function in truth.

2. In God you cannot see. ²Perception has no function in God, and does not exist. ³Yet in salvation, which is the undoing of what never was, perception has a mighty purpose. ⁴Made by the Son of God for an unholy purpose, it must become the means for the restoration of his holiness to his awareness. ⁵Perception has no meaning. ⁶Yet does the Holy Spirit give it a meaning very close to God’s. ⁷Healed perception becomes the means by which the Son of God forgives his brother, and thus forgives himself.

Resting in patience

Resting in patience is not something we do, it is something we rest in through the act of willingness, trust, and surrender. 

It is the application of simple nonjudgmental awareness. When there is a resting in that nonjudgmental awareness as we gaze outward, we are free from resisting or grasping. This is the resting place that patience is graced.

VIII. Patience

1. Those who are certain of the outcome can afford to wait, and wait without anxiety. ²Patience is natural to the teacher of God. ³All he sees is certain outcome, at a time perhaps unknown to him as yet, but not in doubt. ⁴The time will be as right as is the answer. ⁵And this is true for everything that happens now or in the future. ⁶The past as well held no mistakes; nothing that did not serve to benefit the world, as well as him to whom it seemed to happen. ⁷Perhaps it was not understood at the time. ⁸Even so, the teacher of God is willing to reconsider all his past decisions, if they are causing pain to anyone. ⁹Patience is natural to those who trust. ¹⁰Sure of the ultimate interpretation of all things in time, no outcome already seen or yet to come can cause them fear.

Cultivating Inner Calm through gentleness

A powerful truth in resting continually in an inner calmness, is gentleness. Not only the gentleness with others, the gentleness with ourselves as well. 

Can we rest in a gentle calmness, a gentle quietness, a gentle peace, that embraces our entire being? 

The truth is, non-judgment and total surrender in the moment cultivates inner calmness that is gentleness in every way, in all areas of our life.

4th characteristic of a Teacher of God

IV. Gentleness

1. Harm is impossible for God’s teachers. ²They can neither harm nor be harmed. ³Harm is the outcome of judgment. ⁴It is the dishonest act that follows a dishonest thought. ⁵It is a verdict of guilt upon a brother, and therefore on oneself. ⁶It is the end of peace and the denial of learning. ⁷It demonstrates the absence of God’s curriculum, and its replacement by insanity. ⁸No teacher of God but must learn,—and fairly early in his training,—that harmfulness completely obliterates his function from his awareness. ⁹It will make him confused, fearful, angry and suspicious. ¹⁰It will make the Holy Spirit’s lessons impossible to learn. ¹¹Nor can God’s Teacher be heard at all, except by those who realize that harm can actually achieve nothing. ¹²No gain can come of it.

2. Therefore, God’s teachers are wholly gentle. ²They need the strength of gentleness, for it is in this that the function of salvation becomes easy. ³To those who would do harm, it is impossible. ⁴To those to whom harm has no meaning, it is merely natural. ⁵What choice but this has meaning to the sane? ⁶Who chooses hell when he perceives a way to Heaven?⁷And who would choose the weakness that must come from harm in place of the unfailing, all-encompassing and limitless strength of gentleness? ⁸The might of God’s teachers lies in their gentleness, for they have understood their evil thoughts came neither from God’s Son nor his Creator. ⁹Thus did they join their thoughts with Him Who is their Source. ¹⁰And so their will, which always was His Own, is free to be itself.

It then begins to go through those particular characteristics. The first one is called Trust. In that section called Trust it goes into six different stages of the development of trust.  I'd like to share on that a little today because it's so powerfully true.  The first stage of the development of trust is called a period of undoing. The second is called a period of sorting out. The third is called a period of relinquishment. The fourth is called a period of settling down. The fifth is called a period of unsettling. The sixth is called a period of achievement. All of these traits rest on one thing alone and that is Trust and so the next section is called honesty and that is what I will read from A Course in Miracles underneath the above scribing.
